The most recent example I can think of is Mad Max: Fury Road. I just didn't get the trailers and went in ready to hate it but it ended up being one of my favourite movies of the year. I think when a movie surprises you, whether in a good or a bad way, it sticks out more. I still have trouble with silent Chaplin. Then again, I haven't enjoyed anything Rob Reiner did after A Few Good Men (w/ the exception of The American President) as I was kind of annoyed the film and that scene with the mentally-challenged uncle made me cringe in the worst way. thevoid99https://www.blogger.com/profile/03055459287396592446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-227751790693713235.post-40301931228252040632016-03-01T16:08:41.043-05:002016-03-01T16:08:41.043-05:00That's a fun idea for a blogathon. He's variable but has done some really good films, I'll put it on my list to check out.

Two came to mind for me that both started out as duty watches for one reason or another but I ended up really enjoying.

The first "Limelight" starred Charlie Chaplin who up to that point I wasn't too fond of but I kept seeing it pop up on different best of lists so I decided to give it a shot because it seemed like something I SHOULD have seen, never really the best way to approach a film, and I remained hesitant. It was almost instantaneous though once the film began that I fell under its spell and by the end I was just blown away.

The other, "Wings" I put off for years but I had to finally breakdown when I got close to the end of seeing all the Best Picture Oscar winners. A silent movie about flyers in WWI just somehow didn't seem like something that would fit into any of my sweet spots as a movie fan if you know what I mean but WOW it was brilliant! It took me a while to get into its rhythms as it usually does for me with silents but once I adjusted it was fascinating to watch. joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-227751790693713235.post-47559277534076181952016-03-01T10:36:02.612-05:002016-03-01T10:36:02.612-05:00It is a very cool idea.
