White Swan, Black Swan Blogathon

Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan is a magnificent film. Among the numerous themes it explores is duality. Is our lead character a black swan or a white swan? It also happens to be the favorite movie of Sati over at Cinematic Corner. As such, she decided to use her latest blogathon to pay homage to it. Not surprisingly, it's called the White Swan, Black Swan Blogathon. Yes, we're talking about duality, here. In Sati's words...

There are so many fascinating cases of character being one thing to the outside world and completely different person in reality - Mavis from Young Adult, Patrick Bateman from American Psycho, Brandon from Shame...you can choose characters from all the genres and it's doesn't matter if they are lead or very supporting.

Okay, cool.

Click the link to see all the rules in detail. The main thing to know is that Sati is looking for characters who most certainly are just one person with multiple sides. So no lookalikes or twins or any of that crap.

I get it. Let's do this.

I'm going with someone who absolutely fits the bill. She's our heroine in 1996's The Long Kiss Goodnight, played wonderfully by Geena Davis.

WHITE SWAN

Manifestation: Samantha Caine
Samantha is your typical soccer-mom/school teacher/devoted soon-to-be-wife in a little bity Pennsylvanian town. A fun night for her involves baking cookies. She rocks fluffy sweaters and long skirts, and genuinely looks forward to the town's upcoming Christmas festivities. Being mean just doesn't seem to be in her DNA. I suppose if you pushed her, she might say "Oh fiddle sticks!" However, something is amiss. She can't remember anything from more than 8 years ago. It becomes imperative that she figure out what happened back then when some folks show up to kill her. Slowly, but surely, she starts remembering. Some things start coming back to her.

She realizes that she is not at all what she's convinced everyone she is, including herself. Samantha is really the...

BLACK SWAN

Manifestation: Charly Baltimore
Charly couldn't possibly be any more different than Samantha. She's a brash, cussin', hard drinkin' broad who isn't afraid of anything. And she's definitely not a school teacher. She's a CIA operative who has found herself in one hell of a mess. Good thing she's an expert at hand-to-hand combat and with all sorts of weaponry. It seems Samantha was the last cover Charly used before things went terribly awry. She really believed she was this sweet, dainty flower when in fact she was the exact opposite. So did everyone else except a few special people who wanted her dead. Charly likes to play hardball, though. Therefore, there's only one thing to do: kill everyone trying to kill her. The ladies in the PTA will never believe this.

  1. Thanks so much for joining the blogathon! I love your choice - this is one of my favorite action flicks form the 90s and damn it's kinda timeless. Shame about Geena Davis disappearing.
