Thursday Movie Picks: Bookish Movies

It's the first Thursday Movie Picks of November, hosted by the wiser-than-I Wanderer at Wandering Through the Shelves. I love that our topic this week is so vague. Bookish movies. Hmm. Lots of directions to go with that one. Guess what, though. I'm still in October mode, so I'm going that way. That means YOU GET A HORROR FLICK!

AND YOU GET A HORROR FLICK!

AND YOU GET A HORROR FLICK!

EVERYBODY GETS A HORROR FLIIIIIIIIIIICK!

Se7en

(1995)

If you haven't seen this movie, stop reading this and find it. NOW! If you have seen it, you still might be puzzled about why it's here. Did you forget that a rather creepy collection of notebooks features prominently. Page after page is filled with meticulous handwriting. That's as much reason to pause as anything.

The Babadook

(2014)

Amelia is a widow living with her son Samuel. One night, he picks out a pop-up book called "Mister Babadook" for their nightly bedtime story. Even as she is reading it, things start to change. The lead performance by Essie Davis is amazing. She helps make it one of my favorite horror movies of the 2010s.

The Evil Dead Franchise

(1981-???)

This group of gory gut-wrenchers, two of which also happen to be laugh-filled, are centered around a book nobody has any business reading. It shows up in every movie of the franchise, the television series Ash vs. the Evil Dead, and is as much a character as anyone else. It even has crossover appeal, having appeared in the Friday the 13th movie, Jason Goes to Hell. This had lead some to suggest that it gave the murderous oaf his power. Hmmm.

  1. 2 awesome films and one incredible film series. Can't go wrong with any of these picks.

  2. A theme within the theme! Love those even if horror isn't my go to genre by any means.

Surprisingly for me I've seen all three of these (well the first Evil Dead anyway).

I appreciated Se7en's skill and performances but can't say I enjoyed it. I watched Babadook for Essie Davis, I'm an enormous fan of her Miss Fisher Mysteries, and she was fantastic but I'll never watch again. Evil Dead had some humor but it just wasn't for me.

I'm having computer issues this week so while I have three I'm relying on the google synopsis for clarity.

The Book Club (2018)-Four friends' (Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Diane Keaton and Mary Steenburgen) lives are turned upside down when their book club tackles the infamous "50 Shades of Grey." From discovering new romance to rekindling old flames, they inspire each other to make their next chapter the best chapter.

The Jane Austen Book Club (2007)-Quirky dog-lover Jocelyn and many-time married Bernadette decide to start a book club exclusively dedicated to Jane Austen, primarily to help distract their friend Sylvia from the fact that her husband has just dumped her. Frustrated French teacher Prudie, Sylvia's daughter Allegra and sci-fi fan Grigg join up as well.

The Pillow Book (1996)-Nagito has a fetish for calligraphy on the human body and meets ideal soul-mate Jerome, an English translator sent to Japan. However, once Nagiko's father's gay publisher rejoins the scene, the story is overtaken by treachery and bloodlust.

    1. You're one up on me because I haven't seen any of your picks. I've come close to watching The Book Club on a couple occasions, but wound up going in another direction.

  3. I can't disagree with any of your picks. I like all of them. The Evil Dead franchise is a personal favorite, though. A number of years ago, I saw the original as a midnight movie at a local theater, and it was fantastic on the big screen.

Apropos of nothing, there is a cookbook based on the H.P. Lovecraft version of the Necronomicon. All of the recipes are written as ancient texts or chants. And, naturally, it's called the Necronomnomnom.

    1. I'm jealous. I've never seen The Evil Dead on the big screen.

I'd be terrified try any recipe from the book, lol.

    1. I think you'd actually like The Babadook. It is a horror, but it's more about the relationship between a mom and her son and how they've been impacted psychologically and emotionally by the events of their life up to that point.

  6. Oooh! Awesome picks! I honestly haven't seen any of these movies, but I've been hearing that Se7en and the Babadook are pretty good movies!

  7. These are great choice, especially Se7en. I watched that movie several times last year because it was on netflix and why watch something new when Se7en is RIGHT THERE.

  8. Uuuuuh those are some great picks I never would have thought of!

  9. I don't remember anything book related in Seven but I haven't seen it in a long time. I do remember The Babadook though, but not a fan of it.

  10. I haven't seen your third pick but I absolutely love the other two, especially Se7en.
