Girl Week 2021: 10 Gorgeous Movies Shot by Women

Welcome to Day 4 of Girl Week 2021! As I do every year, I'm really enjoying all of your posts. Hopefully, you're enjoying mine.

If you're in America, like me, you're likely spending the day with family and having a massive feast in celebration of the day known as Thanksgiving. With that in mind, I'm just providing a picture post today to honor women in a field where they have gotten far less attention than those on the other side of their cameras - cinematography. These are shots from 10 movies where the director of photography (DP) is a woman. This isn't a ranking, so they're presented in no particular order.

Black Panther

DP: Rachel Morrison

(2018)

Be Kind Rewind

DP: Ellen Kuras

(2008)

Deidra & Laney Rob a Train

DP: Quyen Tran

(2017)

Beau Travail

DP: Agnes Godard

(1999)

A Quiet Place Part II

DP: Polly Morgan

(2021)

Honey Boy

DP: Natasha Braier

(2019)

Mulan

DP: Mandy Walker

(2020)

One Night in Miami

The Wrestler

The Miseducation of Cameron Post

  1. I love this post! You've got some great films here, and a few I still need to check out. I forgot The Wrestler had a female DP. That movie is so good, I need to re-watch it again.

    1. That makes two of us. I haven't seen it in quite some time, myself. And it's soooo good.

  2. I have only seen Black Panther and The Wrestler which have both great visuals in a completely different way. I would like to see Mulan for sure. I don’t know the others except for A Quiet Place which I will not see....too scary, but I will check out the others. Here is my link https://createdbybb.blogspot.com/2021/11/girls-week-2021.html

    1. I'll be the first to admit Mulan isn't the greatest film, but man does it look good. It might be the best looking movie of the year.

  3. I've seen a few of these so far with Beau Travail being a Blind Spot earlier this year.

    1. Truthfully speaking, that's one I still need to see. I included because I know its visuals are highly regarded. I do plan on watching it soon.

  4. I haven't seen all of these but Beau Travail was a striking looking film. Odd at times but it dealt with complex issues. I doubt that I'd watch it again but it was worth seeing once.

    1. I've heard as much, and I've heard lots about the visuals, which is why I included it. I hope to see it soon.

    1. Thanks! Most people don't, so don't feel bad.
