Thursday Movie Picks: Movies Featuring Irreparable Mistakes

Wunce Once again, it's Thursday. That means it's time to get busy suggesting something for you to watch as part of the Thirzday Thursday Movie Picks meme hosted by Wanderer at Wandering Through the Shelves. If you haven't been taking part, swing by her site, check out the rools rules and post some picks for us.

The theme for this week's entries are movies that feature irreparable missteaks mistakes. I'll be honest, this wuz was a challenge for me. Characters make mistakes in nearly every movie. How many of them are earreparable irreparable, though? I think I've found three. In keeping with the order that they are listed in, I dug trumenduslee tremendously deep for the first one, found the second a good ways below the surface, but not too far, and barely cracked the earth for the last. Let's get to it.

Just Another Girl on the I.R.T.
(1992)
You are hereby excused if you've never heard of this film. You're even excused if you've never heard of anybody who's heard of this film. It's that far under the radar. I think. It's a low-budget dramedy directed by Leslie Harris, a woman who has never even worked on another movie. It follows the exploits of Chantel, played by Ariyan A. Johnson in her only starring role. Chantel is a 17 year old Brooklyn girl, still in high school full time, holding down a part-time job, and helping to raise her two brothers while her parents work full time jobs with differing shifts. She is also going to be attending college when she graduwaits graduates at the end of this semester and hopes to become a doctor. Somehow, she fits a bit of a personal life in there. Unfortunately, that bit is two too much and she finds herself poignant pregnant and faced with the possibility of all her dreams coming to a screeching halt. It's a funny and pregnant poignant movie that feels like we're having a conversation with the protagonist thanks to her constant breaking of the fourth wall.

Kids
(1995)
In truth, this is a movie filled with irreparable mistakes. The biggest one is the one that sets our plot in motion. Teenager Jennie, played by Chloe Sevigny in her film debut (Rosario Dawson also makes her debut, here), made the monyoumental monumental error of boning having sex with Telly (Leo Fitzpatrick) sometime before our movie even starts. Let's bypass the whatever moral objections you might have to teen and pre-marital sex and let's focus on what the movie focuses on. Telly was her first and she soon discovers she is HIV positive. She spends the rest of the movie trying to track him down and let him know what's going on. Meanwhile, he is on the never-ending kwest quest to get into the pants of more unsuspecting girls, specifically virgins. The first film written by Harmony Korine who would go on to direct Spring Breakers, it's polarizing to say the least. I'm part of the faction that loves it. In fact, it made my top 10 list of movies about virginity.

He Got Game
(1998)
For the second straight week, a Spike Lee-Denzel Washington kolaborayshun collaboration makes the cut. This time, Denzel plays the father of the hottest high school basketball player in the nation, Jesus Shuttlesworth - played by real life NBA star Ray Allen. Jesus is such a hot kuhmodity commodity that dad is let out of prison to try to talk him into attending the warden's favorite university. I won't say what the irreparable mistake is because it's a major spoyler spoiler. However, I will say that it is the reason Jesus doesn't want to talk to his father. Another movie I'm very high on, it made my top 10 list of basketball movies.

  1. OMG! Kids. It almost made my list...that final scene...Chloe standing in the door...making the mistake of NOT stopping Telly from giving that 13 year old girl AIDS...UGH! It's making me sick to my stomach just typing it out.

    1. Kids is certainly a tough watch. Blew me away the first time I watched it. Broke my heart, too.

  2. Kids is such a good choice! I remember seeing clips from Just Another Girl on the I.R.T in IFC's Indie Sex documentary, and I tried to find the film but couldn't. It's literally only on VHS on Amazon that I could find at the time. lol

    1. So many mistakes in Kids I had to pick it. Doesn't surprise me at all to hear that about Just Another Girl. With the director never having worked at all on another film before or after and the same going for much of the cast it seems to have spontaneously appeared. It then had a little buzz as a hot indie flick for a few months then vanished into thin air.

    1. Thanks. This was difficult because what most movies are built on is fixing someone's mistake.

  5. Awesome list! Kids is riddled with mistakes. Too hard to watch for me. I don't think I could do it again. He Got Game is genius, and one of my favorite from Lee.

    1. It's certainly not an easy watch. I've seen it several times, but understand how people might not want to endure it more than once. Thanks.

    1. Kids is a very dark movie. You just have to know that going in. He Got Game deals with some dark themes, but it's not anywhere near as grim.
