The 2016 Dellies

Hey, it's only about a year-and-a-half, or a year and two-thirds but whatever, after everyone else has already done this, but here we are - The 2016 Dellies. Of course, that means these awards are for films that came out during the calendar year 2016, going by the U.S. release date since that's where I live.

As always, since this is the "Dellies" (think deli, delicatessen - sigh, you're smart), each of the winners will receive the much coveted sandwich.

It should go without saying, but I'll say it anyway. These awards are entirely subjective. As a side note, don't look for a Best Picture award. In a couple days, I will (finally) publish my list of the best (and worst) movies of 2016. That means the "big one" here is for Best Director. Hold ya' horses, don't just scroll to the bottom. We've got lots of good stuff to get to, including a new category. No, not achievement in "popular" film. We're letting the kiddies get in on the sandwiches, too. Now let's get this show on the road!

  1. Glad to see some love for The Handmaiden as that is still my pick for Best film of 2016. It was fucked-up in all kinds of way. It was beautiful but also disturbing and enticingly seductive. Chan-wook Park would also get my pick for Best Director. I still need to see Fences and a few other 2016 films. I'm already thinking about doing a list of the best films of the 2010s in a couple of years but it will have a (take one) subtitle.

    1. The Handmaiden is awesome and so perfectly twisted. It will be fun to see what everyone chooses as their best films of the decade. Looking forward to it.

  2. I loved Fences and would agree that both leads deserve the coveted sandwich award. I can’t think of many who can put act Denzel, whom I would just stare at in awe if I ever met him, and the great Viola Davis who is strong but who I always want to hug for some strange reason. I love, love Deadpool and rewatched it just the other day. Those opening credits are brilliant because you have to watch it so many times to see all the fun little things placed in there like the evil guys name on the coffee cup:). I could never give anything to that SOB Tyson. I can’t stand that man. Now, back to Denzel who I had a serious crush on even when he was on St. Elsewhere. I think any movie he is in, he elevates it above the norm.

    1. I don't even have a crush on Denzel, but I toow would probably just stare at him if I ever met him. Glad to see some love for the opening credits of Deadpool. Fair enough about Tyson but I just love that scene.

  3. Denzel and Natalie should've won those Oscars. *sigh* I love all your winners. I especially love seeing films like The Handmaiden and Hush getting some love. And that villain nominee for The Eyes of my Mother is perfect.

And yaaaaaaaaaaasssssssssss airport battle! I love CACW.

    1. I loved The Handmaiden and Hush. And she was sooooo creepy in The Eyes of My Mother, wasn't she?

      Gotta love the airport battle.

  4. Which award was easiest to choose? Viola I’m guessing ha. How about hardest?

    1. Believe it or not, Viola's category was tough for me. I was very close to going with Naomie Harris. The first two categories were much easier for me. I didn't think anyone was touching Denzel. I gave some thought to going with Amy Adams for Best Actress, but still thought Portman had a clear edge.

The toughest was Best Animated Feature. All of those are really strong movies. And I went back and forth between My Life as a Zucchini and Kubo and the Two Strings right up until the post went live.

  5. Fun categories to read! Great seeing American Honey and Moonlight get some love. Viola Davis is amazing and my runner-up(Lily Gladstone in Certain Women is my winner in supporting). The Red Turtle is an animation in which I LOVED the first half yet had issues with the story direction in the last half, think I landed on a 7/10 but it had potential to be a 10/10 for me. The Handmaiden had some great visuals and great twists but for some reason I hardly remember the characters.
I don't know if you saw O.J.: Made in America? (I forgive you if you didn't as it's 7h 47min). But if you do it's definitely a compelling watch which doesn't feel as long as it actually is. I keep meaning to watch 13th, thanks for reminding me! And finally I agree that Darth Vader fight scene was epic! (the final 30 min of Rogue One was really well done)

    1. American Honey is a movie I don't think gets talked about nearly enough. So, I am happy to show it some love. And Moonlight is just fantastic.

I didn't see all of the O. J. doc. To be honest, I consider it a TV mini-series more than a movie. I guess ESPN put it in a theater somewhere before airing it. I always thought it should have been up for an Emmy, not an Oscar. Could be just me. Yes, I understand the possible double standard of allowing 13th. I do hope you get to check that one out soon.

      And yeah, Vader.

  6. I always feel like I'm a few years behind, and yet I've seen a surprising number of these films. Train to Busan is one of my favorites from the year, so it would win a few categories from me.

We kind of disagree on Fences. I think it's a great story, but not a great movie. Denzel is fantastic, Viola Davis is transcendant as she normally is, but the movie is...well, it's just a filmed stage play and it looks a lot like a filmed stage play. It's not one I'm likely to watch again, although I would love to see it on stage.

13th is a great call for documentary. So happy to see some love for Julian Denison. Love the win for Kate Siegel, too.

Patrick Stewart wins villain for me; Hidden Figures wins ensemble cast. I understand giving the sammich to Natalie Portman, but I'd give it to Amy Adams, who got robbed of a nomination at the Oscars. Then again, Arrival could not have been more made for me had I written the screenplay.

    1. No arguments from me if you want to give Train to Busan all the awards. I really was splitting hairs between that and The Handmaiden for Best Foreign Feature and that and The Jungle Book for Technical Achievement.

Fences did have some trouble escaping its stage roots, but I still loved it. And Denzel and Viola were off-the-charts good, in my eyes.

13th is so powerful. Denison and Siegel were excellent in their roles.

Stewart's a great call. So is Hidden Figures. Again, no arguments here. For me, Arrival contains the best Amy Adams performance there has been. I still think Portman was better. If it's any consolation, I like Arrival as an overall movie better than Jackie.

  7. Holy shit, I don't even know where to begin. I LOVE the format, Dell. You had me on the edge of my seat with the best action scene - damn. Excellent calls.

I have to be honest with you, though. When I was scrolling down, if my boy JD didn't win for Hunt for the Wilderpeople, I might of bounced out of protest. But you made the right call, and I, thankfully, hung in till the end.

Oh shit, and all kinds of extra credit to awarding anything to ID4:R, or whatever the hell I can call it so I don't have to type it out. That movie was so laughably bad, I might just love it in retrospect. And speaking of things I love....

WHAT IS THIS MIKE TYSON SCENE???????? I didn't even click on it because I need to experience it in context, but holt f--k, really?????? This exists???? Thank you/curse you for showing me this.

    1. Thanks! Glad to see I achieved at least one goal. Ha!

JD was just awesome. There was never a doubt in my mind he was winning that one.

"That movie was so laughably bad, I might just love it in retrospect." Exactly.

I told you before, you need to watch the Ip Man movies. All 3 have some fantastic fight scenes. And the Tyson scene in this one is epic.

    1. Thanks. I really miss Drew's blog. I thought about writing and cinematography. Maybe for 2017. Maybe not. I did see your 2016 awards, and left a comment way back when. FYI, when I went back to check that I had, none of the pics showed up for me so I can't tell what they were.
