Thursday Movie Picks: Asian Horror

Thursday has rolled around once again. That means it's time for the latest greatest installment of Thursday Movie Picks. It's a weekly meme hosted by Wanderer at Wandering Through the Shelves. If you would like to get in on the weekly fun...and you should...click the link to find out how. This week we're hitting a topic of which I'm rather fond: Asian Horror. I'm quite anxious to see what the rest of the participants have picked, more so than usual, because I'm looking for more to watch. Here's what I've got for you...

Audition
(1999)
Recently I reviewed Starry Eyes. In that film a girl auditions for a movie role only to be put through a horrifying experience by the people leading up the production. This film is the flip side to this. Sorta. A guy advertises a casting call for a leading lady in the film he's making. Funny thing, there is no movie. He's just trying to meet women. Oh, he meets one, alright. To say she terrorizes him is an epic understatement. Let's just say she makes what Glen Close's Fatal Attraction look like a bout of puppy love.

Dumplings
(2004)
Mrs. Lei is feeling her age more than a little, thanks to her husband's numerous affairs with younger women. She seeks out a woman known as Aunt Mei, whom she's heard makes some special dumplings that will rapidly return her youthful good looks to her. We soon find out that these dumplings have a rather peculiar ingredient. The more potent you want them, the "fresher" this ingredient must be. Nope, not gonna tell what it is. I will say that this is probably the most morbid movie I've ever seen.

Cold Fish
(2010)
When a young girl is caught shoplifting from a successful exotic fish store, the owner takes pity and offers to take her in. The girl's actual father runs a not-so-successful exotic fish store, admires the guy, and doesn't get along with his daughter, so he agrees to the arrangement. There's just one little ol' thing dad doesn't know about. The shop-owner and his wife are serial killers. This movie is flat-out bonkers. We in the audience learn such helpful things as how to properly dispose of a body so that no evidence is left and that killing someone with a ballpoint pen is quite messy.

  1. Audition.... that is a film that I never ever want to see again. It scared the fuck out of me.

I saw a shortened version of Dumplings as part of the Three.... Extremes anthology film that featured a segment by Chan-wook Park and another by Takashi Miike. Still, that was a damn good one.

    1. The version if 3 Extremes that I own came with the feature length version of Dumplings on a separate disc. So I watched the other two in short form and nevet bothered with the short version of Dumplings.

  2. Audition (Odishon) is a real creep, anytime I remember the woman from the movie I already imagine the pain. I have only seen the short version of Dumplings in Three... Extremes, but never in a whole movie; it's so visceral and yeah uncomfortable.

    1. Uncomfortable is a great way to describe both films.

  3. I love Audition, I picked it as well. I haven't seen the other two, but I just threw Cold Fish in my Netflix queue!

    1. Glad to see the love for Audition. Didn't realize Cold Fish was on Netflix. Might watch it again. Can't wait to see what you think of it.

  4. These all sound unsettling. I'm sitting the week out, I have absolutely no knowledge in this particular genre and not being a horror fan little impetus to explore it.

    1. I figured this would be the case. And they are all VERY unsettling.

  5. Cold Fish sounds like a barrel of laughs.... almost as much as Audition LOL.

I still think that the proper way to see Audition is to not know anything about it going in. That way the horror really pounds you in the gut when it finally comes. It's structured and paced so brilliantly... BUT if you don't know what's coming it's so much more effective.

  6. Yup 3 films I probably won't see because I don't care for gore. I am also a chicken so I scare quite easily. I am curious about the dumplings though...must be people's brains or something

  7. Oh boy, I don't know if I could handle a single one of these. They all sound more horrifying than the last.
