The Sunshine Blogger Award AND a Liebster!

Apparently, it's awards season in the blogosphere once again. Blogging buddy MovieNut14 at Defiant Success saw fit to nominate me for a Sunshine Blogger Award, like I'm a good blogger or something. Obviously, a huge mistake, but I'll take it anyway. Jia at Film and Nuance made a similar blunder and nominated me for a Liebster. Despite their obvious lack of judgement, both are excellent bloggers. I highly recommend swinging by their places to see what they've got going on.

These awards have pretty much the same rules. They are simple:

  1. Post the award on your blog
  2. Thank the person who nominated you
  3. Answer the 11 questions they sent you
  4. Pick another 11 bloggers (and let them know they are nominated!)
  5. Send them 11 questions

Fair enough. Let's do this, starting with my answer's to MN14's questions for the Sunshine:

Favorite movie not many people have seen?
I racked my brain for an actual good movie, but nah, gotta be me. Gotta go with something so ridiculously bad not many of you would enjoy it. That film is Raw Force from 1982. It's a glorious piece of exploitation that has a little bit of everything - martial arts, gangsters, cannibal monks, zombie samurai, loads of gratuitous nudity, and man-eating piranhas. What's not to love?

Same question but with a TV show.
I'll go with a show Fox ran in the early 90s called Roc. Charles S. Dutton played the titular character, a sanitation man just trying to raise his family in Baltimore. It's an excellent how that managed to run for three seasons (I think) based almost solely on quality and potential because audiences never quite took to it in large enough numbers to justify its existence.

Who do you want to see a biopic of and whom would you cast?
Richard Pryor, but I have no idea who I would cast. I suppose Michael B. Jordan would be my top candidate.

Any movie(s) you're looking forward to?
For this year, I'm looking forward to Star Wars: Rogue One.

Have you attended a film festival?
Surprisingly, no.

Black and white or Technicolor?
Depends on the material. Some films work better in black and white, especially when we're dealing with something that's supposed to be a gritty affair. Something meant to be more vibrant requires the eye-popping colors Technicolor provides. For instance, Citizen Kane and color do not go together, but I couldn't imagine 1966's Batman: The Movie without it.

What's your favorite book?
The Autobiography of Malcolm X as told to Alex Haley. It really is an amazing book and it has stuck with me in pretty good detail even though I haven't read it in years. Have to throw a book of poetry in the mix, as well. That book would be The Father by Sharon Olds. It's a wonderful book about her relationship with her father from her youth until his death. You will grow to hate, then later, pity this poor man.

Star Wars or Star Trek?
Star Wars.

Western or film noir?
Film noir.

Sci-fi or musical?
Sci-fi, by a wide wide margin.

Comedy or drama?
Usually drama, but it depends on my mood. Some days you just wanna laugh.

Now, on to Jia's questions for the Liebster.

1.What is your favourite movie in your least favourite genre. And why?
The genre is musicals. I don't automatically hate them, I just find myself disliking them more often than other types of films. The movie is Grease. I don't think it's the best musical ever, but it's one I grew up with and have passed on to my children through multiple viewings so it's become a family fave.

2.If you had to favour a certain style (for directing a film, writing a book or any other art form of your choice), would you prefer a no-frills and direct approach, or an artistic and ambiguous one. Why?
I rather let the content dictate the style. Some material calls for a no-frills approach, while other material would benefit from an artsy-fartsy one. I'm the say way with reviews. Some films warrant precise, to the point reviews while others invite you to be more cerebral, possibly abstract in my thinking, and ambiguous in my opinions,

3.Name a movie you can watch any day.
Do the Right Thing.

4.If you could keep an object that you had previously but by now either lost it,sold, misplaced, had it stolen or destroyed, what would it be?
I have two: my comic book collection or my baseball card collection. Either one would surely have garnered me a few extra bucks by now had I taken care of them.

5.Pick an era to live in.
As many problems as we're having right now, I'd still pick the current era because we have progressed greatly from where we've been. Of course, if the future is an option I'd like to live during that era when we finally achieve a global utopian society. Fingers crossed.

6.The best film you’ve seen this year and an unreleased 2016 film that you think might beat it.
Deadpool. I haven't seen a lot of this year's critically acclaimed movies just yet. As for what might beat it, I'll totally cop out and say something released between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

7.Name a memory you would keep till your death.
Lots to choose from. I'll pick the night I met Mrs. Dell. (go ahead: AWWWWW.)

8.Ice-cream or popsicles?
Ice cream.

9.Where do you stand on the Harambe case?
I don't. I wish we would all move on from this, really.

10. Favourite type of music? And what does it mean to you?
Hip-Hop. I literally grew up with it and within it. We are roughly the same age and have developed alongside one another. Therefore, it has become part of my identity. It's not my entire identity, mind you, but it is a sizable chunk of it. And yes, what it is now disheartens me.

11. How do you cool off after being upset/angry?
See #10. In other words, I recede into my own world by donning headphones, picking out one of the genre's classic albums, pressing play, turning the volume up loud as I can stand it, and rapping along.

Now, I have to choose 11 bloggers. Here, is where I will be a bit lazy. Rather than nominating 11 for each award, I'm going to split you guys up. Some of you will be nominated for The Sunshine Blogger Award, while others will be nommed for The Liebster. I'm going to nominate bloggers I (don't think) I have nominated before, so please, if you're one of my long-time blogging buddies don't get your panties in a bunch.

Nominees for The Sunshine Blogger Award
Let's Taco 'Bout Film

Nominees for The Liebster Award

And...your 11 questions (of course they're the same for both awards):

Who should direct the film about your life?
What movie do you claim you hate, but secretly love?
How many movies do you watch in a normal week?
How do you watch most of those movies? (DVD, Netflix, theater, etc.)
What TV series would you like to see be made into a movie?
What movie would you like to see be made into a TV series?
What band would like to see get a biopic?
Have you ever lied about seeing a movie? Why or why not?
What movie did you have to be dragged to, but ended up loving?
What movie were you excited to see, but ended up hating?
If you were exiled to a desert island and could only take one movie, one book, one album, and an unlimited supply of just one food, what would you take?

Have at it, bloggers.

  1. Can I just say, I've had so much fun reading all the answers to these blogger awards! Everyone's answers are so different and unique to them.

I know I'm not nominated but your Q&A actually got me thinking about my own answers so I'm just gonna go ahead and put some thoughts/answers down here in the comments...

    1) Michael Bay because my life is sorely lacking hot babes and explosions and that needs rectifying. This is actually a really crap answer haha. In all seriousness, I have no idea. Someone who could spin a compelling yarn about something quite mundane probably. Scorsese? Spielberg? Go big or go home haha!
    2) Underworld
    3) Between 2-4
    4) A mixture of all three. At least one in the theater
    5) I'd love to see that Community movie eventuate.
    6) The Nice Guys
    7) The White Stripes
    8) Yeah, a couple of times. Purely because I didn't want to appear as 'that guy' who hasn't seen X classic or Y cult film. I'm working on rectifying a lot of the gaps in the 'ol back catalog though ;)
    9) Tangled. I've seen it a couple of times now and it actually could be better than Frozen? The music is better in Frozen tho.
    10) Suicide Squad. Man, that movie sucked.
    11) This is the real clincher that got me thinking! Here goes. Movie: Empire Strikes Back. Book: Half-Blood Prince because it's the book I've read more than anything else. Album: Suck it and See, Arctic Monkeys. Food: Potatoes. If I learnt anything from watching The Martian, it's that you can survive for a hella long time by just eating shit tonnes of potatoes.

Anyway, I should probably get back to work now - it's been a slow day, can you tell? ;)

    1. No problem. I love seeing your answers. My reaction to a few of them...

      1) The life of nearly everyone I know is sorely lacking hot babes and explosions, especially the latter, so I wouldn't be mad if Bay were your real answer, lol.
      9) Tangled is at least as good as Frozen, if not better. And I'm so tired of the music in Frozen.
      11) Potatoes, lol.

  2. I always like reading these things because you get to know a little. I am a musical fan so musicals always win out. Star Trek forever ...forget Star Wars(sorry). I would go insane if I had to listen to hip hop or rap. I love classical music, film music, classic rock along with music from the 80's like Depeche Mode or The Eurthymics. I normally see films via DVD and still rent but I still watch them on the simple TV. I'd like to pick Guy Ritchie to do my bio or Stanley Kramer. I can't think of a movie I say I hate but secretly love. I might pick just about any Will Ferrell movie because they are stupid but I laugh out loud. The 2 movies that I was excited to see and can't stand is In the Bedroom( in boredom) and Atonement( aBorement). I just don't get the love for these 2 flicks. I can't think of a film I was dragged to and was surprised by. As for a tv series made into a movie??? Maybe Bonanza and the other way around Stepping Out. This is a film with Liza Minelli and I really like this film. I would bring It's A Wonderful Life, a book, "What Great Paintings Say" and I can't live without my toast and honey.

    1. I like reading them for the same reason. Sweet Dreams is one of my all-time favorite songs. Hell, I can still clearly picture the video as it plays. Guy Ritchie is a great choice. Lots of other nice answers, too. Thanks for playing along.

  3. Always great to find out more about you. what TV series would you like to see adated to screen? A Richard prior biopic would be sensational if done correctly. I'd be hugely upset if they messed it up.

  4. Good question. Not real sure, but a TV series that was just brought back might have worked better as a standalone movie. That would be MacGuyver.
