On My Mind: The Furiously Unfurious Weekend

Having three teenagers makes sneaking out for date night a bit easier for my wife and I than it was when they were younger. It's still not easy enough, though. We've still got lots to do. Occasionally, we sneak out on a weeknight and just eat a relatively quiet dinner together. We enjoy that time together, but prefer those even rarer times when we can get away on a Friday or Saturday night. When stars align properly to allow such a thing, dinner grows into an outing that might include some window shopping, or at least some walking and talking, and most definitely a movie. That was the plan for yesterday.

My wife is a huge nut for the Fast and Furious franchise. We knew we weren't going to be able to go on the opening weekend of Furious 7, but wanted to go this weekend. However, there were errands to run first, those things moms and dads have to do to keep the household running. We estimated when we would be finished. She then spent a few minutes online searching for movie times before six when ticket prices are a bit cheaper. Then we headed to the car, revved the engine and set forth on our one day journey with our youngest in tow. She needed a new jacket.

Getting the jacket was just one of a number of things we had to do. I won't bore you with details. Just understand that we were leaving home at about 10 AM and planned to be done by about 3 PM. However, our laundry list seemed to grow as we worked our way through it. We never properly anticipate this though it seems to happen all the time. You know how it goes. We get stuck in one place longer than expected. Another is out of that one thing that we have to have today, so we have to make an unplanned trip across town to the only other place that has it. Somewhere along the way, we realize we forgot that there was something else we needed. And on it goes.

The extra running around took its toll on my wife. She was exhausted and intimidated by a part of the story I haven't told you yet. Within the last month she went back to school to get her Master's. Her allotment of free time has decreased quite a bit and she's still adjusting. The biggest change is that she now has to write papers. In fact one is due tomorrow. And she had barely gotten started on it. Most daunting of all, she's not the natural writer that I am. It's something she's not done at all since graduating from college about fifteen years ago. I'm going to have to hold her hand through this first one, at least, and probably the first two or three. So when we finally got home close to 5 PM, she was in no mood to devote the number of hours it would take to drive to the theater, watch the movie, and drive home, let alone trying to make a full blown date of it. We went in the house, grabbed something to eat with the kids. and took a few minutes to exhale. We then gave each other that look. I saw the twinkle in her eyes and was quick to move when she motioned me toward the bedroom. She got there first. I hurried in and closed the door behind me. Within seconds we were gettin' busy.

On her paper.

  1. I hear you so much on this one. We got the kids down early last night and hope to watch a movie, or gasp! Maybe two. Instead, we folded laundry and she fell asleep.

If it doesn't get better by the time my two are teenagers, I'm going to go all Michael Douglas in Falling Down. Really.

    1. Been there, done that so many times. We have been known to fold laundry while we watched a movie...and then fell asleep. Just don't go Falling Down.

  2. My wife and I don't tend to enjoy the same kinds of movies (which makes me question why I married her, really... LOL!!) but when we do get the kids into bed, it's usually a catch-up on television shows, or she'll do some reading and i'll watch a movie on my tablet or PC. Gotta take advantage of some alone time when you can get it, I say.

Thanks for the linkage, dude! Much appreciated!

    1. Believe me, my wife's idea and mine of what make a good movie are too entirely different things. Still, it's something we like doing together. I'm with you on the need for alone time, though.

      No problem!

  5. Nice! My wife is currently getting her Ph.D and, man, that shit is daunting. I could say the same exact thing about my wife not being the natural writer that I am. She can't get through a paper without having me read it for clarity a few times. And the stuff she has to write about it so...effing...boring. We don't have kids yet. I can't imagine. Great post, man. Love to see a more personal side of the bloggers I follow.
