Thursday Movie Picks: Snow/Winter Horror

Yes, I love horror. And the aesthetics of horror in the snow are amazing. Watching blood splatter across the snow is simultaneously satisfying and terrifying. I think our host, Wanderer at Wandering Through the Shelves knows this. That would would explain her picking snow/winter horror as this week's topic for Thursday Movie Picks. As appealing a subject as this is, it was a bit difficult to get off the beaten path. Let's see how I did.

My Bloody Valentine
(1981)

Think of this one as a warm up for next week's topic. Warm up, lol. Anyhoo, this classic slasher is all about the strange goings on during a winter in a coal mining town. Our masked killer is iconic. And the 2009 remake isn't half-bad, either.

Dead Snow
(2009)

Speaking of 2009, that's the year we got this little gem. It's an ode to 80s slasher flicks set in the Alps where some college kids get picked off one by one. The twist is that the ones doing the picking is a group of zombies who were actual World War II Nazis. Oh yeah, there's a sequel I have to see. (Full review)

Troll Hunter
(2010)

I'm not a huge fan of found footage flicks, but there are a few I really enjoy. This is one of them. It's about a group of college kids making a documentary about all the damage bears are doing up in the mountains and the people who hunt them. Of course, they soon discover what's really up there. Yeah, it's in the title. (Full review)

  1. I've only seen the middle one and it's probably the only one I will see.
When I think snow, I think The Shining. I just rewatched that the other day. I know that kind of snow.

  6. I am likewise 0 for 3 on these though unlike the others I'm more than likely never going to watch any of them. The one I'm most familiar with the first which was among a spate of holiday horror that flooded the theatres in the early 80's.

I wouldn't say it was a snap but I did manage to come up with these three.

Dead of Winter (1987)-When struggling actress Katie McGovern (Mary Steenburgen) answers a vague casting call for a leading role she is approached by the mysterious Mr. Murray (Roddy McDowall) and invited to a snowy upstate New York mansion to film a screen test. Upon arrival she meets Dr. Lewis (Jan Rubes) who eagerly hires her to replace an actress she is told suffered a nervous breakdown. However Katie shortly begins to realize dark forces are at work and trapped by both the men and the snow she soon fears for her life.

The Abominable Snowman (1957)-British scientist John Rollason (Peter Cushing) and his wife Helen (Maureen Connell) wile away their days studying plants at a monastery in the Himalayas. When his American associate Tom Friend (Forrest Tucker) arrives he proposes an expedition to find the mysterious creature Yeti aka The Abominable Snowman. Despite warnings the pair set out along with Friend's partner (Robert Brown) and a guide (Michael Brill) who claims he can find the beast. However the trip quickly becomes more dangerous than they had anticipated.

The Thing from Another World (1951)-The Air Force sends in Captain Hendry (Kenneth Tobey) and his team to the remote North Pole research base headed by scientist Dr. Arthur Carrington (Robert Cornthwaite) when he reports a crashed UFO nearby. Upon investigation they discover a strange frozen creature (James Arness). Bringing it back to the base the men quibble over how to proceed, meanwhile the creature is mistakenly defrosted and watch out!!

    1. 0 for 3 this way, too. I do, however, plan on seeing The Thing From Another World sooner rather than later.

  7. I like the first My Bloody Valentine. The remake...not so much. Dead Snow, though, is an absolute blast.
